Advisory Board: Richard Gitlin


Richard A. Gitlin is Chairman of Gitlin & Company. Gitlin & Company is devoted to facilitating and creating investment opportunities in the restructurings of corporations, banks and sovereigns. Mr. Gitlin recently served as Senior Strategic Advisor to Nomura Group to assist Nomura in implementing restructuring strategies for Japanese companies. Prior to establishing Gitlin Company, Mr. Gitlin was the President of Hebb Gitlin, PC, a firm he co-founded in 1973 to provide strategic and legal advice in global bankruptcy and business restructurings.

Highlights:

  • designed, recommended, and helped to implement the Japan Corporate Recovery Fund, managed by the Development Bank of Japan and funded with 200 billion yen.
  • served as advisor to several countries regarding the modernization of their insolvency laws, including Canada, Korea, Indonesia and Mexico, and to the US State and Treasury Departments, and the IMF in connection with corporate and sovereign restructuring reform.
  • acted as Vice Chairman of The Group of Thirty study groups that issued a report making recommendations with respect to international insolvencies in the financial sector.
  • served as US bankruptcy court-appointed examiner or mediator in connection with national and international matters including Maxwell Communication Corporation's cross-border insolvency proceedings.
  • was named one of the 100 Kingmakers, Deal Breakers and Power Brokers by CFO magazine, June 2002, Global 100 list, for his work in pioneering the process of transnational bankruptcies as well as for his continuing work on large debt restructurings.
  • was chosen by The American Lawyer (April 2002) as a "Dealmaker of the Year" for 2001.
  • was a Founder, builder and has served as either President or Chairman of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the American College of Bankruptcy and INSOL International, organizations devoted to improving insolvency systems.
  • acted as an Evaluator at the UNCITRAL, INSOL and IBA meeting held in Vienna to set the stage for future coordinated efforts in improving insolvency systems throughout the world.
  • was a key adviser and drafter of the Statement of Principles for a Global Approach to Multi-Creditor Workouts prepared by INSOL International in cooperation with the Bank of England.
  • drafted the Principles of Sovereign Debt Restructuring issued by the Council on Foreign Relations.
  • was lecturer at the Harvard Institute for International Development on the topic of "Global Financial Crisis and Reform".
